Serve Dispensers 2019.
Serve is a effervescent tablet storage and dispensing unit, creating a solution for discreet and effective overnight denture and retainer cleaning.
Dental hygiene is extremely important when using dentures and regular cleaning is essential to prevent further tooth decay, gum disease and other dental problems. It isn’t always necessary for denture users to remove their dentures during the night, however it can be beneficial to do so, allowing their gums to rest at night.
In addition to this, nearly one-third of the UK population is either considering, or has received orthodontic treatment, with retainers representing a significant percentage of that. The hygiene requirements of retainers match that of dentures demonstrating the clear opportunity for a discreet cleaning and storage product.
Identify then Design.
Initial sketch ideation was done to explore a wide range of dispensing mechanisms from a technical point of view, as well as multiple rounds of research and client interviews to understand the user journey and key product requirements.
Iterative rounds of development and evaluation were performed through the creation of physical test rigs, ranging from foam and card mockups to more resolved 3D printed prototypes in order to rapidly move the design forward.
Defining a Design Language.
Careful consideration was given to product aesthetics. Form development was focused around a minimal, sculptural design. A key consideration was the fact that this product would be used primarily in the home and would therefore need to integrate seamlessly into a variety of different environments.
Design Refinement.
After multiple rounds of prototyping across both EVT and DVT stages, a higher fidelity, fully functional model was created to help demonstrate the product and allow the client to raise capital to progress the product through DFM, supplier sourcing and ultimately mass manufacture.
